Principles of Danish Landscape Architecture

One of the most characteristic features of Danish landscape architecture is a considerable degree of freedom of design, but freedom based on both functional and aesthetic requirements.
The desire to achieve a high degree of visible clarity in Danish landscape design is not new, and is apparent in many old gardens; indeed often reflecting Baroque examples in a distinctly simple and extremely sparse style. The architecture of buildings may have changed over the centuries, but landscape gardening is distinguished by a certain continuity.
Perhaps it is the longevity of trees that encourages simplicity of artistic and architectural design in Danish landscape design, providing gardens with a sense of universal permanence despite the changes taking place in society around them. Gardens should be functional and yet simple in design - and it is the combination of the two that brings landscape gardening close to Art. The way in which the elements of the gardens are organised provides a fundamental impression of space, design and scope, thus reflecting something of the essence of both architecture and sculpture. Moreover, the sense of space in Danish gardens provides an impression of timelessness, and the plants used are independent of any style or fashion.
It is true that certain periods have left traces that were never intended to last, but this is also the case with Art. It is the job of the restorer to preserve Joseph Beuy's butter in solid form, and likewise, the care and preservation of gardens involves a process of selection in which only the most robust elements survive, while Father Time will remove the most transitory features.
As a result of this process, Danish gardens have changed little over the centuries, being subject to inspiration and influences which are largely independent of time.
